Introduction: The objective of this research in support of the Sectional Secretariat of Health and Social Protection of Antioquia (Co- lombia) for carrying out activities of the Oral Health Project was to estimate the baseline indicators of caries experience in permanent dentition in the population aged 12, 25, 35, 45, 55 and 65, who attended dental consultations for the first time in 2010 and 2011 in Antioquia, Colombia.

Methods: A database with 11,211 records was analyzed, which has been consolidated and standardized by the Sectional Secretariat of Health and Social Protection of Antioquia and the Ministry for Social Protection. The cavitational and non- cavitational caries experience were recorded during the dental evaluation. Prevalence and experience of dental caries, and the traditional and modified dmft indexes, were calculated.

Results: Overall, 86.7% of the study population had experienced dental caries with a mean dmft index of 8.7 ± 7.5 and a modified dmft index of 8.9 ± 7.4. In the 12-year old group, the dental caries experience was 61.5%. The mean dmft index was 8.7 ± 7.5, and at 12 years of age it was 1.8 ± 2.1. Nevertheless, that value increases with age, reaching 18.2 ±7.7 at age 65. Finally, at 12 years of age, the modified dmft was 2.1 ± 2.4.

Conclusion: The mean dmft for the 12-year old population evaluated in the Department of Antioquia was lower than the goal established for the country as a whole in the National Public Health Plan. Nevertheless, a large percentage of these children have already been affected by  caries.
