Complaints filed with the dental ethics tribunal of antioquia in 2007-2010
Introduction: The article is derived from research carried out in 2011 by the giom research group from the Odontology Faculty at the Medellín campus of the Universidad Cooperativa de Colombia, on the “Most Frequent Complaints Filed with the Dental Ethics Tribunal in Medellin”. In Colombia this profession is regulated by the Dental Code of Ethics (Law 35 of 1989). Various factors generate failures of service, which in turn give rise to patient frustrations expressed through complaints filed with the Dental Ethics Tribunal. The objective was to analyze patient complaints to the Dental Ethics Tribunal of Antioquia in 2007-2010.
Materials and methods: A descriptive study, with prior approval from the Dental Ethics Tribunal of Antioquia. A structured questionnaire was applied that had been previously validated through a pilot test. A database in Microsoft Excel® 8.0 was created and the information was tabulated using SPSS® 15 software. Non-parametric Mann-Whitney and Fisher Exact tests were used to determine the dependence between the variables.
Results: 43 Complaints filed between 2007 and 2010 were analyzed. 85.7% were filed at the request of the patients, 65% of whom were women. Complaints occurred mostly in the private sector, with a statistically significant difference in relation to the public sector (p = 0.001). 81.1% involved general dentists. 37.2% of the complaints had to do with the performance of prosthetic procedures, followed by 18.6% due to surgical procedures. In 76.2% of the complaints, charges were not brought. Informed consent was applied in 48.3% of the complaints.
Conclusions: The use of informed consent is very important in dental practice.
