ORAL HEALTH KNOWLEDGE, ATTITUDE, AND PRACTICES BY INMATE POPULATION AT YOUTH CENTER “CARLOS LLERAS RESTREPO”, MEDELLÍN 2010
Introduction: adolescents, who are confined in a detention center, have not the appropriate psychical and health conditions because many of them have been living in the street or a family environment suffering social and economic problems. So, important topics such as oral health are not relevant for them.
Objective: establishing knowledge, practices and attitude regarding oral health by delinquent population inside the Youth Center Carlos Lleras Restrepo ‘La Pola’ in Medellin in 2010. Materials and methods: descriptive study with a chosen sample of 142 inmates. Two self-managed questionnaires with closed questions were used to measure interest variables.
Results: 60 percent reported a positive response on knowledge of caries; 80 percent of population identified using toothbrush, toothpaste and dental floss; 98 percent of population considered oral health important.
Conclusions: attitudes regarding oral health are good. Population recognizes dentist visits as a practice of oral hygiene.
