Prevalence of facial type and its relationship to dental arch forms in a population in bogota, colombia
Introduction: The study entitled “Prevalence of Facial Type and its Relationship to Dental Arch Forms in a Population in Bogotá, Colombia” was carried out in 2011by the postgraduate odontology research group at the Universidad Cooperativa de Colombia. The aim was to establish the prevalence of facial type and its possible relationship with the arch form in a population in the city of Bogotá.
Materials and methods: Cross-sectional descriptive study, with a probabilistic sample of 123 patients. The Facial Index and Arch Form was measured using a Vernier gauge and AutoCAD 2010 software.
Results: A predominance of the mesoprosopic facial type was found (85%), followed by the leptoprosopic (12%) and euriprosopic (3%). With regard to the arch form in the superior maxillary, the ovoid was the most frequent according to the length ratio (71%) and width ratio (75%). The ovoid was also the most frequent arch form in the lower maxillary, according to the length ratio (76%) and width ratio (72%). No association was found between facial type and the upper and lower arch form classification (r < 0.19).
Conclusions: The facial types do not always coincide with the arch form, and the upper arch form does not always coincide with the lower arch form.
