Triggering factors of temporomandibular disorders in university students

Introduction: The temporomandibular joint plays an important physiological role in humans by participating in activities such as speaking, eating, chewing, yawning, which is why it is a highly demanded joint and susceptible to alterations recognized as temporomandibular disorders, which are highly frequent and They imply a limitation in daily movements and other associated symptoms, constituting a global health problem; The student population being extremely susceptible to these disorders due to their relationship with psychosocial factors.
Objective: Identify the triggering factors of tmd in students of the Faculty of Physiotherapy of the ces University in 2024.
Methodology: Cross-sectional observational quantitative study with a descriptive approach through bivariate analysis, objectively identifying the association between temporomandibular disorders and possible triggering factors.
Results: 297 students from the Faculty of Physiotherapy participated, of which 58% were female, the average age was 20. Greater symptoms were identified as associated with the female sex; however, an association was also found with the quality of sleep, the practice of sports or physical activity, semester taken, subjects enrolled, and sporadic episodes of anxiety.
Conclusion: Academic load, sleep quality and emotional stress are important triggering factors of tmd, which highlights the importance of addressing psychoemotional well-being and the implementation of healthy habits in the university environment.
