Resumen

Introducción: La enfermedad periodontal y la enfermedad aterosclerótica presentan altas tasas de prevalencia a nivel mundial, con una asociación a una respuesta inflamatoria crónica además de múltiples factores de riesgo en común. Está definido que el tratamiento periodontal mejora los procesos inflamatorios locales en los tejidos de soporte del diente mejorando la respuesta inflamatoria local por lo que se ha sugerido un posible impacto sistémico en diferentes enfermedades como las cardiovasculares, artritis y efectos adversos del embarazo entre otras. Existe amplia evidencia que considera como factor de riesgo independiente la presencia de enfermedad periodontal en las enfermedades aterosclerótica, pero existe reciente evidencia de estudios clínicos que observen el efecto del tratamiento periodontal. Es por esto que el propósito de esta revisión es conocer la evidencia relevante que existe sobre el efecto del tratamiento periodontal en pacientes con enfermedad aterosclerótica en el periodo de 2005 a 2016.Método: se realizó una búsqueda en inglés y español en las bases de datos PubMed, Embase y LILACS, donde se utilizaron los distractores “periodontal disease”, “periodontal diseases treatment", "atherosclerosis”, periodontitis” enfermedad periodontal, y aterosclerosis.Resultados: Se encontraron 14 artículos que evidenciaron una relación significativa en la efectividad del tratamiento periodontal relacionándolos con los niveles plasmáticos y/o marcadores inflamatorios tales como Proteína C-reactiva e IL-6 entre otros y una respuesta favorable en la función endotelial, se encontró evidencia con un tiempo mayor a 6 meses posteriores a la terapia periodontal.Conclusión: los resultados enfatizan la efectividad y necesidad del diagnóstico y tratamiento periodontal en los pacientes con aterosclerosis para disminuir sus factores de riesgo.
