Engineering is, without a doubt, one of the branches of knowledge that has evolved the most as a consequence of the globalization processes; it is however important to think about the levels of economic and social inequality of contemporary societies implied by these phenomena. This reflectión paper, derived from the thesis “Economic rationality in the players of the market, the case of mobile phones”, made in the Universidad Distrital Francisco José de Caldas, 2011, analyzes the role of the state, especially when it comes to a social state under the rule of law as Colombia, presenting an overview on this topic. It also shows how globalization affects both the State’s and the population’s roles, the changes brought about by this phenomenon, and its potential to lead to an economic prosperity that requires the existence of a democratic and efficient government with institutions able to support and regulate the market, provide robust mechanisms to eradicate social iniquities and, specially, to meet the needs demanded by today’s society with enough determination and resources.
