El artículo presenta los resultados de la investigación “Creencias epistemológicas y vivencias positivas en matemáticas”, financiada por la Universidad Central “Marta Abreu” de Las Villas, la cual fue orientada a explorar las creencias epistemológicas sobre las matemáticas en alumnos que cursan el octavo grado (entre 13 y 14 años de edad) de la enseñanza media cubana. Se utilizaron las entrevistas semiestructuradas, observaciones y el cuestionario de Antoni Vila y María L. Callejo (2003), con las adaptaciones que requiere el contexto investigado. Además, se diseñaron situaciones de trabajo grupal como herramienta proyectiva para la triangulación de la información. La interpretación de los resultados mostró que el sistema de creencias de los sujetos está matizado por vivencias negativas asociadas con periodos reiterados de falta de comprensión de las matemáticas; pocas habilidades para la integración de conocimientos y propiedades matemáticas; escasa o nula relación entre las matemáticas y la vida cotidiana; motivación extrínseca hacia las matemáticas, interfiriendo en la elaboración de significados positivos hacia esta.
