Introduction: Guttapercha cones, although they are packed in aseptic conditions and have antimicrobial pro-perties due to their high zinc oxide component, can be contaminated during transport and handling in the clinical environment.

Objective: To identify an effective substance for the disinfection of gutta-percha cones that minimizes changes in their morphology.

Methods: An experimental in vitro study was carried out with gutta-percha cones from undergraduate stu-dents. A random sample was obtained where 114 cones of caliber 25 were collected.

Results: When observing the samples in the SEM, it was found that the substances that modify the cone sur-face (porosity) in a greater percentage were: sodium hypochlorite 5.25% and chlorhexidine 2%; and in a lower percentage, hydrogen peroxide 6% and glutaraldehyde 2%.

Conclusion: According to the literature, the most effective substance for the disinfection of gutta-percha co-nes is 5.25% sodium hypochlorite and 6% hydrogen peroxide, regardless of their effects on their surface. In the present study, it was observed that the substances that caused the least morphological changes in the gutta-percha cone were 2% glutaraldehyde and 6% hydrogen peroxide. Therefore, 6% hydrogen peroxide has disinfection activity for gutta-percha cones without causing or minimizing surface changes in them.
