Introduction: this research paper presents a systematic review that stems from the research project “Streptococcus mutans and dental cavities in Latin America: systematic literature review.” Developed from 2004 to 2011, which was undertaken at the ces University and was concluded at the Universidad de Antioquia. The research was carried out by the “Edumicro” (Education and Microbiology) research group from the Universidad de Antioquia. Dental cavities are an infectious, chronic, transmissible, and multifactorial illness. This ailment has a high prevalence among children and young population and is thus considered a public health problem in multiple countries in which its transmission, distribution, etiology, and the incidence of Streptococcus mutans have been studied. The study of this subject has yielded large volumes of scientific literature with varying degrees of quality. Motivated by this this, we have carried out a systematic literature review to summarize the existing evidence on the relation between Streptococcus mutans and dental cavities.

Materials and method: we selected observational and descriptive studies carried out on children of up to 14 years of age made in Latin America between 1995 and 2009. We found the studies through the PubMed, MedLine, Bireme, Lilacs, Licocs, Hinary, Scielo, Science Direct, and The Cochrane Library databases, restricting the search through keywords and limiting ourselves to research published in Spanish, English, and Portuguese.

Results: we found 88 articles on the topic and 32 of them met the inclusion criteria. We found a positive correlation between dental cavities and Streptococcus mutans in 12 studies. Thirteen studies evaluated the relation between cavities and other risk factors. The main factors related to the illness were previous cavities, low socioeconomic level, a saccharose-rich diet, and unsatisfactory oral hygiene.

Conclusions: the results found in most studies show that the presence of Streptococcus mutans seems to be related with the appearance of cavities and with sociocultural factors.

Keywords: dental caries, descriptive and observational studies, oral hygiene, children, socioeconomic status, systematic literature review, saccharose, Streptococcus mutans
