Handling of the Behavior of Pediatric Patients by Students of the School of Dentistry, Universidad Cooperativa de Colombia, Medellín, 2012
Introduction: According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, the management of the behavior of the child in consultation needs a continuous interaction between the child and the dentist to provide the necessary confidence. The objective of this research was to learn the handling techniques most widely used by students to approach pediatric patients in dental consultation.
Methods: Descriptive, cross-sectional study with 211 students in clinical of Pediatric Dentistry of 7th to 10th semester at the Faculty of Dentistry of the Universidad Cooperativa de Colombia at Medellín, with a representative sample of 137 students, who answered a confidential survey voluntarily.
Results: 57% of the students expressed that the reason for consultation does not affect the child’s behavior. They said that the behavior is instead related to other factors such as fear and anxiety or relationship of the child with the family environment. Students refer that the most frequent types of behavior of the patient at the time of the consultation are “positive” and “totally positive” in 70% of the cases. The most used technique was tell-show-do at 78.1%, followed by positive reinforcement by 45.3% and the less used technical hand over atenmouth at 58.4%. 91.9% of the students considered the tell-show-do technique to be easy to handle and 80.3% of them believe that the accompanying teacher influences the behavior of the child.
Conclusion: The students are satisfied with respect to the knowledge and practice of management techniques for pediatric patients and are certain of the good quality of clinical care; they perceive their experience as a good one.
