Evaluation of the gingival health of patients with acrylic provisionals from a university clinic in the city of Medellin
Introduction: In the face of extensive coronal destruction or loss of a tooth, a complete restoration is thought of, whether it is a metal-ceramic crown or a totally ceramic crown, as the definitive process, but before this, a provisional restoration must be used, which will carry out for a short time. the indispensable role of replacing function, aesthetics, but also participates to evaluate the effectiveness of a future treatment by being a guide to rehabilitation.
Objective: To evaluate the gingival health in patients with acrylic provisionals from a university clinic in the city of Medellín.
Materials and methods: It is a cross-sectional quantitative approach study, in which the selection of teeth with provisionals was carried out at convenience, taking into account the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The sample consisted of 52 teeth with acrylic provisionalization. A sociodemographic survey was carried out on the patients and two indices were applied to the area with the provisionals: the Loe and Silness gingival index and the Loe and Silness plaque index; in addition to evaluating the characteristics of the provisional such as texture and cervical adaptation.
Results: Analyzing the accumulation of plaque in the provisional, it was obtained that 40.38% presented an excellent removal of plaque, with respect to the inflammation of that gingiva at the level of the gingival margin, taking the Loe and Silness index (IG) as reference. 53.85% of those gums had mild inflammation.
Conclusion: When evaluating the gingival health of patients with acrylic provisionals, it is concluded that the greater the accumulation of plaque, maladaptive provisionals, and unremoved cement, the greater the gingival inflammation will occur, which will delay the definitive rehabilitation process.
