Structural architecture for global youth agency in cooperativism
This theoretical-analytical essay examines the structural conditions that enable or constrain youth agency within the cooperative movement and the social and solidarity economy (SSE). Drawing on a review of specialized literature on youth, cooperativism, and intergenerational governance, complemented by extended participant observation in cooperative settings, the article argues that the SSE constitutes an ethical and systemic response to the generational disillusionment produced by labor precarity and the collapse of neoliberal meritocratic promises. The study proposes a conceptual framework organized around three interdependent imperatives: dignified ownership, which redefines the relationship between youth, labor, and capital by positioning solidarity (Factor C) as an autonomous source of productivity; operative voice, which transforms symbolic participation into polycentric governance and effective decision-making agency; and structural emancipation, which secures the sustainability of generational renewal through financial safeguarding, intercooperation, and technological sovereignty. The analysis draws on experiences from Latin America and other regions —Puerto Rico, Uruguay, Quebec, and Colombia— that illustrate concrete mechanisms for youth participation in cooperative governance. The essay concludes that closing the gap between inclusive rhetoric and institutional practice requires a deliberate design that moves beyond the discourse of inclusion, turning young people into co-owners, co-decision-makers, and co-architects of the cooperative future, thereby consolidating a civilizational transition toward a people-centered economy.
