The paper presents the main results of a research project whose objective was to determine the main resilient characteristics of first year university students from the Escuelas de Superación de Atletas (espa) (Schools for Athlete Superation) in relation to their peers, from the pre-university system of the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Cuba (Mined).
We made a psychological study of the life stories of the subjects and employed a semi structured interview, the Dembo Rubinstein scales, the self-esteem inventory, the inventory to evaluate resilient factors, the Lazarus and Folkman Ways of Coping questionnaire, and the M. Casullo isolation and loneliness questionnaire. We observed as main result that students who systematically practice sports present better levels of self-esteem and autonomy, are more secure when acting, and have better ways of copping. In students that don’t practice sports regularly, we observed a better use of the resources that come from family support and a lesser tendency to feel isolation and solitude.
