The study of mental disorders has led to the formulation of various classification systems, including categorical and dimensional models. However, these approaches may be influenced by dominant theoretical models, the proliferation of diagnoses, and symptomatic comorbidity, which can bias the diagnostic process and affect the effectiveness of clinical interventions. In this context, the present article presents symptom network theory as an innovative approach that enables more precise and personalized diagnosis and treatment. From this perspective, symptoms are not viewed solely as manifestations of an underlying disorder, but rather as dynamically interacting elements that form a complex network.
This model facilitates the understanding of comorbidity and the evolution of mental disorders by integrating elements of the categorical and dimensional approaches. Likewise, it makes it possible to identify the central or most influential symptoms in the perpetuation of disorders, which could contribute to optimizing therapeutic interventions. Finally, a new hypothesis is proposed for the understanding and application of network theory, with the aim of expanding its explanatory and integrative scope, considering aspects such as diagnostic migration and its articulation with cognitive-behavioral therapy.
