PORPHYROMONAS GINGIVALIS, CHRONIC PERIODONTITIS AND CARDIOVASCULAR RISK FACTOR

Cardiovascular diseases report a high rate of morbidity and mortality worldwide. It is considered that up 40 percent of cases, it is not possible to identify traditional risk factors, such as cholesterol, high blood pressure and dyslipidemia, among others. In the last decade, the chronic periodontitis has joined the table of risk factors due to infection and inflammation involving both local and systemic, since it favours bacteria penetration and its waste into the bloodstream. Once installed on endothelial cells, it triggers vascular changes and subsequent risk of atherosclerosis, myocardial infarction and stroke. To demonstrate and explain the invasion of periodontal cells from huge arteries, currently a C-reactive protein, as a clinical technique is used where the serum level may predict future atherogenic events.
